Although not quite a traditional American Thanksgiving, we did enjoy some holiday festivities this week. There is no Thanksgiving celebration here in the UK, but this year Thanksgiving coincided with the kick off of Edinburgh's Christmas. So, after a day of work and study, we met some friends in the City Centre to watch the Tree Lighting Ceremony. The Edinburgh Christmas tree is gifted each year from Hordaland, Norway in gratitude for the help and support received during World War II. It is a large, beautiful tree that has a prominent display in the city. Following the countdown to the lighting of the tree, the lights came on signaling lights across the city centre to switch on and triggering a short fireworks display.
(Sadly, my pictures of the lights and fireworks did not turn out).
The people at work and in our French class (which met on Thursday), were very interested in our Thanksgiving holiday-what we ate, what we celebrated, etc. Although we didn't do a full, traditional Thanksgiving feast, we enjoyed a pre-Thanksgiving meal with friends on Wednesday and had some tasty Thanksgiving desserts with friends on Thursday. I have to admit that now I am craving a few Thanksgiving dishes and am thinking that we will have to do the traditional meal for Christmas!
We do feel very thankful this holiday season. We are settling well into life here. I am thankful for my job and Joe is happy to be studying. We are thankful for the friends we are making and our families and friends back home who keep loving and supporting us! (And, I'm thankful to all of you who read this blog!!)
